Let’s Play in the Dirt!

As a child, the term “playing in the dirt” was spoken almost daily by my mom…we were encouraged to go outside, build forts, hunt for treasure, and my personal favorite, make mud pies. Surrounding myself with nature, discovering new and exciting things through the wonder of adventure sums up my childhood, growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA. Although my childhood home was in a subdivision with an HOA and strict landscaping guidelines, my parents made sure we had seasonal vegetable gardens and boy were they impressive.

From an early age, I learned the importance of caring for “Mother Earth” so that she can care for us. Since I can remember, my dad had a massive, steamy compost pile (which is still there and very much taller than I am). My grandparents had expansive gardens in middle & southern Alabama, of which I remember fondly helping tend to them, discovering exciting and new (to me) plants, fruits and vegetables. My grandmother had rose gardens, that as a child, I steered clear of as I knew how painful those thorns could be. But I still remember admiring how beautiful they were and how lovely they smelled…

After the social and cultural shifts caused by covid with many tragedies and losses, I found myself reflecting on who I was and who I wanted to be. Asking myself, “do I really want to spend my days locked into screens, jumping from role to role in corporate America performing jobs that never truly fill my cup?” Although my most recent roles have provided an undoubtedly invaluable opportunity to grow professionally and I’ve achieved so much more than my 20-year-old college dropout self ever dreamed of, it just isn’t what I was put on this big blue marble to do.

My very intuitive mother sat me down one fall afternoon in 2023, noticing how lost I felt and sparked up a conversation that I will never forget as long as I live. She was scrolling on her tiny iPhone, letting me know the latest with distant friends and relatives and suddenly paused and said, “have you seen this girl? She’s riding around in a flower truck and selling at farmers markets!” At that point, the light bulb burst into a million tiny shards as I finally felt the weight of 20+ years lift off my shoulders. In that moment, I knew exactly what I had to do. Some daydreaming ensued and after a few weeks of truly talking about what all of this actually could become, Bradford Blooms was born!

So here we are in January of 2025, and after taking care of all the necessary steps to create a new business, I’m home…I’m that 10-year-old kid again, full of wonder and playing in the dirt.

With Love,

Anna ‘Bradford’ Singley
